In order to live full, active lives and maintain our physical and psychological well being, we all need time to rest, recuperate and exercise. The way in which we spend our leisure time is therefore important (and also individual) to us all, regardless of whether or not we have epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a very individual condition so choices about whether or not to participate in particular activities or sports need to be made on an individual basis – ideally with full involvement of the person who will be undertaking them. Choices should be realistic not restrictive.

It is important that children of school age who have epilepsy are included in the full range of activities unless their seizures prevent this. When seizures are uncontrolled informed decisions will need to be made, where possible, involving the child as well as the parents.

WHICH ACTIVITIES MIGHT NEED SPECIAL CONSIDERATION?

Some people with uncontrolled epilepsy may be concerned about their safety when deciding whether or not to participate in a particular leisure activity. Most activities can be made safer by adopting simple safety measures to help minimise any potential risk.  The links above refer to activities about which most questions are asked.
